As with all car audio products the next generation is always around the corner. The competitive nature of the industry means that if companies fall behind with products it’s very difficult for them catch up. So what do they have to do to stay ahead of the game and how much say do we have in the new products being developed?
Well surprisingly a lot. Manufactures of all products aim to cover all aspects of development, from predicting future trends to ensuring the functionality of unique and original features work correctly. A good source of new features is new products released from other industries that become popular and mainstream. The classic example of this is the iPod, now virtually all headunits are fully compatible or have an adapter making them compatible. However ultimately the features on headunits are dictated 100% by the user, as the manufactures compete for sales the functions that they provide must be interesting and useful.
Over the past 10-15 years car stereos have continually evolved from originally only having an AM Radio system capable of receiving AM Frequencies. To now having top of the range stereos capable of playing films & DVD’s, built in Sat Nav maps that cover whole continents, Built in Bluetooth Hands Free calls and music streaming, Hard drives capable of storing 1000’s of tracks and so much more. The Head unit is the centre piece of every car (entertainment wise) & in the day of digital media the easy access to all files allows you to create your perfect system, allowing you to listen to your favourite music or letting your kids watch their favourite films while your on the move.
So what’s next? Well were not 100% sure at the minute, the next range of headunits are likely to be a continuation of the predecessors, updating the image, speed and functions currently available. However download speeds from wireless broadband devices are ever improving so it’s likely in the near future stereos will be capable of downloading all media files & playing them instantly. Meaning your car could be used as your very own media centre.
